New Year, New City! Welcome to Boston!

It's a new year, which means there's a time to reflect in the past and a time to look ahead into the future. My life has changed 180 degrees over the past month and I thought a blog would allow me to show you the insights to my life not only as a journalist, but as Brian Mozey himself.

Now if this skyline doesn't look like downtown Minneapolis to you, don't worry, it's not. I changed my scenery to start the new year and will be living on the East coast for the next six months. The reason for this new city and a 180 degree flip is because of an application I decided to fill out last October.

I was looking for an internship for the upcoming summer and decided to apply with every top rated daily newspaper in the country. This list included the Boston Globe. While, I was looking through the application, I noticed there was a separate application for a spring co-op. I decided to fill it out because I was looking for any opportunity to land my way.

Fortunately, I received an email and phone call about a week after my application was sent in. The Boston Globe called me and wanted to set up an interview to understand me better as a person. After the interview, it took a few weeks for the company to review the material and come up with a decision.

That wait was well worth it.

On November 17, 2016, I received an email from the Boston Globe that would change my life all for the better. The newspaper accepted my application and wanted to offer me a sports co-op position for the spring semester.

I dropped my phone after reading the email and hoped that it worked when I picked it up because I had to call so many people. Before calling anyone, I replied to the email saying I would be honored to work for the Globe and couldn't wait to start in January.

That night consisted of a lot of phone calls, a small celebration and a dead phone. Then I woke up on Friday morning and the stress began to hit me like a hurricane. I had to find a place to live, a car to drive, an understanding of Boston and an understanding of the schools I would be covering. All of this had to be done in a little over a month.

With three days to spare I got everything done and I was able to enjoy the holiday weekend. My mother and I left late Christmas night, so I could be good to go for training on Tuesday morning. Once we landed at the airport, I knew this was going to be an experience unlike anything else.

After a fully stocked pantry (thanks mom), all my suitcases unpacked (thanks mom again) and a nice dinner to start my Boston adventure (I knew bringing my mom with me would be helpful) I was ready to start my training.

My first day of training, I walked towards the building and I wanted to act mature and professional, but once I saw those three words my straight face became a big smile. I've been watching the movie Spotlight and have been reading content on their website for numbers of years, but I never thought in a million years I would actually be writing for this prestigious newspaper. I had to soak it in.

Training was basic. The usual stuff. How to file an article. Expectation of the company and my position.

The basics of my position is to cover the south part of Boston and write weekly features for the print product on Sundays. Since I have a whole week to write these articles, there's a high expectation of detail and well-written pieces. Just turned in my first feature story today and looking forward to seeing it in print this upcoming Sunday.

Even though the job has kept me busy, I had the entire weekend to explore the Boston area. I went to the John F. Kennedy Museum and Library, which describes the behind-the-scenes of him not only being a president, but prior to that in his childhood and early adulthood. The museum is located right off the water, which meant I was able to take a picture of the skyline, which is the picture attached to this post. It's a beautiful place and once it gets about 30 or 40 degrees warmer, it'll be a great place to relax on a weekend.

Besides the museum, I went to TD Garden to watch the Boston Celtics play and win. I also went to go watch Boston College play Syracuse and also win. It's weird but Boston has a different philosophy than Minnesota. Their teams win football, basketball, hockey games instead of losing almost every one of them. Sorry for the shot Minnesota fans, but it's true. The only thing we can cheer for is our hockey team. Go Wild!

This past week has been a blast with all the activities and learning from some of the best writers in the country, but it also has been a big transition. Being away from friends and family has been hard, so I've been trying to work harder and harder to get my mind off of it. I know it'll get better with time and this is just a test trail because I know I'll be back home in July.

If you've never been to Boston, it's definitely a place you want to explore. There's so much history in this city and the Boston accents are so great. I would suggest taking a visit if you can. So the goal of this blog is to keep you informed on my experiences in Boston as well as what I've learned throughout this co-op.

I hope to continue learning something new everyday and by the time I go home, I hope to have a Boston accent, so I can freak my mom out. Hopefully everyone had a great New Year's and maybe a day off of work today for some.

I hope this journey in 2017 continues to get better as the days go by for me and for the rest of you. Hopefully you can join me on my adventure throughout this 2017 year. Take care and happy Monday!
